Latest News: The Vermont Senate education committee has taken up our bill, S.18, designed to protect students’ guaranteed rights of free speech and free press. If all goes well, the bill will progress through the Senate and House in time for Gov. Phil Scott to sign it into law this year.
My work as a journalist and student media adviser stands side-by-side with my passion for protecting First Amendment rights for students and educators. In 2016, I was among the lead writers on a national report about threats to student press freedom, and I serve as chairman of College Media Association’s First Amendment Advocacy Committee.
In our committee, we strive to prevent college administrators from squelching the First Amendment rights of their students, which they try to do more often than you’d think. In collaboration with groups like the Student Press Law Center and the American Association of University Professors, we promote the cause of responsible but unfettered free expression.
If you know of a student or adviser who finds him or herself under duress merely for doing what any good young journalist or media educator should be doing, please get in touch.
