Research

During my time as a Ph.D. student, my academic writing has gained notice.

Google Scholar lists my first published article, “The Four Phases of the Digital Natives Debate,” as the fourth most-cited on the topic of digital natives since the time of its publication in 2020, ranking it in the top 1% of journal articles cited by other scholars. It’s in the top 7% going all the way back to 2012, eight years before it was published.

My research-in-progress includes a case study about the Illinois Student Newsroom program. Educators attempting similar work tell me this program has achieved more in a shorter time than any other they know. I hope to explore, catalog and come to understand the reasons why this program has succeeded in ways others have not—if that assumption is what my research actually bears out.

I anticipate this manuscript becoming the first of many regarding innovations in the growing field of audio journalism education and increased experimentation with academic/professional news partnerships, which are proliferating in an era of ever-diminishing traditional news staffs.

I expect to have my Ph.D. in hand by May 2023.
